In the last post, we saw that if we would like good stuff to come out of our mouths, we’d better guard our hearts because that’s what determines what gets into our hearts and eventually out of our mouths. But how easy is it guarding our heart? What about stuff that has already got into our heart? Can we undo the bad that we got into our heart, in the first place?
Right, so there’s no one who has not said a wrong word or done a wrong deed ever. All of us fall short of the glory of God and need Jesus as our savior [Romans 3:23]. And most of us have allowed stuff into our heart that later we might have thought was not such a good idea. For example, for a long time, I thought white lies were OK to tell as it was meant for the benefit of others or for me in a sort of good way. No. White lies aren’t good no matter what you think about them. There are ways you can avoid white lies and let the Holy Spirit guide you into that. But when we realize about unwanted stuff we allowed into our heart, we know that it needs to get out (not through our mouth though 😊).
Look at the part of this scripture in bold [Matthew 15:19 – NKJV] “For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies”. We know that thoughts dwell in our minds. But this scripture shows us that they have their origins in our heart. And that’s why if we have the wrong stuff in our heart, we are bound to have the wrong thoughts in our mind.
[Psalm 37:4 – NKJV] “Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart”. When we take delight in God, when we value him and want to be intimate and one with him, he does something. He gives you the desires of your heart. Now obviously if you need a house and you ask God for someone else’s house, he won’t make that person homeless and give you his or her house. That’s not what this verse is saying. It, in fact, is saying God will give you the right desire that will be birthed into your heart. So, you need a house to live in, God will make a way and get you that, your focus is not the getting of the house, your focus is on delighting in God and you will get there. So many miss the point of this verse and start to focus on the material blessing instead of God and wonder why this doesn’t work. Just get intimate with God and see how if you had a wrong desire, it suddenly got changed and then you desire the right thing and get it. That’s what this verse is saying. You will know what to ask and God will give you what you ask. So, keep delighting in God and he will keep changing the wrong desires in your heart into right ones.
Here’s another powerful way to change the wrong in our heart into right. [Romans 12:2- NKJV] “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God”. Even if the wrong thoughts got into our mind the way to change these thoughts is to get our minds renewed that is the beginning of our transformation as believers. If we don’t renew our minds we end up conforming to the world and agree with the world on what is good or bad for us. This is how exactly we allowed some wrong stuff into our hearts in the first place. But how do we renew our minds, you ask? That’s the real spiritual warfare I’ll say. [2 Corinthians 10:4-6 – NASB] “For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, and we are ready to punish all disobedience, whenever your obedience is complete”. Our daily walk with Jesus consists of destroying everything that comes up against the knowledge of God and we make every thought captive so that it becomes obedient to Christ. In doing so, we are dealing with the falseness and lies of our thoughts which had its root somewhere in our heart. As we keep doing it, our heart changes. A true example of this is that I never believed in miracles and healing and one point in my life. So, I would constantly have wrong thoughts regarding this. But then I got to the place where I could trust God and believe and soon the condition of my heart in this area changed. Today I don’t doubt an iota about miracles and healing and keep seeing an abundance of them in my daily life. I had to make this thought obedient to Christ who physically healed me and then there was no doubting because I had the proof.
So, we can allow God to change the desires of our heart and thus take away unwanted stuff from our heart and we can renew our minds by bringing our thoughts captive to Jesus the Word of God and get transformed from the mess in our minds. We further continue to guard our heart by not conforming to the world and instead follow the leading of the Holy Spirit.
