corruption

Look around you today. What do you see? In one word I can describe it as corruption. Whether its consumables, living things, habits, behavior, philosophies… you name it and you will see corruption everywhere.

As India goes into elections this month, people are fed up of corruption in politics and the government and want a corruption-free government to come into power. Sadly there doesn’t seem to be a single candidate who can prove to be clean, but there are hopes that one of the newly formed parties which has taken popularity will promise to deliver. Many are hopeful, all want a change.

When I look into the situation I say only Christ can do it. Actually He already did it. What am I talking about? Let’s look at [2 Peter 1:2-4 – NKJV] which says: “Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.”

The above verse says that in the knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord we have grace and peace multiplying unto us. So if you want peace and want to experience God’s grace then get the knowledge of Jesus our Lord and God. Next it says that His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness. So all that you need to live a godly life on earth has already been given to us. Wow! Where is it? Where is everything that you need? It is given to you through the knowledge of Him, Jesus our Lord.

So through the knowledge of Jesus we receive a multiplication of peace and grace, we also receive all that we are ever going to need to live out our lives in the best possible way. So the more you focus on Jesus the more you receive life and the power to overcome and be victors. Jesus came full of grace and truth [John 1:14, 17], and we keep receiving that grace and truth with our eyes fixed on Him. He has called us by his glory and virtue, so all you can do is respond positively to Him, so that you can receive from Him.

Next it says by which we have been given exceedingly great and precious promises. So as we receive the knowledge of Jesus, we receive grace and truth in our lives and through that grace and truth we get a hold of the not-just-good-but-exceedingly-great-and-precious promises. Ah! so that’s the secret. All the wonderful promises of God that we constantly hear are contained in Jesus because He is the way, the truth and the life [John 14:6]. So the question to ask is “Am I experiencing these great and precious promises?”. Don’t settle for mediocre, but grab a hold of the exceedingly great and precious promises. That will turn around your life, you won’t be a victim, you’ll be a victor.

Next it says that through these you become partakers of the divine nature having escaped the corruption in the world through lust. Do you get it? These exceedingly great and precious promises are what make us partakers of God’s divine nature. Imagine Jesus walking the earth today, do you think when he enters a place where people are infected with H1N1, He will retreat? Do you think He will first go and have a flu vaccine and then come? No you will say He is God and doesn’t have to. That’s right He has a divine nature that escapes the corruption in this world. When His disciples were afraid that the boat they were on would sink and that they would all die, He rebuked the winds and the sea and there was a great calm [Matthew 8:23-27]. We see all the great things recorded in the bible done by Jesus because of His divine nature, though He was in human form, he escaped the corruption of the flesh and did the work His Father called Him to do.

But guess what, you and I are made partakers of that divine nature of God so that we too can escape the corruption in the world. Why is there corruption? Because of lust. Lust here is not talking about an sexual desire, but it just means a strong and overpowering desire. It could be desire for things of the world or flesh and this is what leads to corruption. Basically it is a wrong desire, because [1 John 2:15-16 – NKJV] says “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world – the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life – is not of the Father but is of the world.”

So to escape the corruption of the world God wants you to focus on Jesus and receive truths about Him. Truths that defeat tradition, religion, customs, beliefs, philosophies, behavior and transform us within so that our nature matches that of His. It is only when we are conscious of ourselves being partakers of His divine nature that we are no longer conformed to this world [Romans 12:2] (think about the example of Jesus I mentioned above) and we can live out these exceedingly great and precious promises.

Jesus said in [John 14:12 – NRSV]“Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father.”Are we doing the works that Jesus did, leave aside the greater works that He mentions above? We are called for that but unless we understand our share in His divine nature we will continue to conform to the world and partake of the corruption that exists.
