Before man was created, the Lord God created the heavens and the earth, plants, trees, animals, birds, fish and finally man. All of these, he created by speaking His Word and they came into existence as we see in Genesis chapter 1. When Adam sinned, all of mankind was plunged into sin and there immediately arose a need for mankind to be saved. God could see that man would not be rescued on his own, so He gave up His Son Jesus so that we would be saved. However for Jesus to be born, God had to speak His Word through men of faith to prophesy how the birth of Jesus would take place, what He would do, how He would die and what God’s plan was for the eternity of mankind. All this was accomplished through His prophets like Isaiah, Jeremiah, Daniel, etc. Jesus fulfilled all the 400 odd prophecies about Himself in the Old Testament. Therefore Jesus is the Word that became flesh [John 1:14].
So to understand the term “Word of God” we need to know what was spoken by God (and also all that was spoken and written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit i.e. the contents of the entire bible) and we need to know Jesus Himself revealed as God in the flesh. So the printed text on paper does not become the Word of God (Yes, the bible that is the book made of paper and written in ink is not the Word of God), but when we allow the Holy Spirit, who dwells in us, to bring to life that which was spoken by God and to reveal God to our mind and heart, that is when it becomes a Living and Active Word in us.
Suppose you were badly in need of a million dollars and were miserable because of it and let’s say I decided to help you since I had the money and therefore I wrote a letter to you that I would be providing you with the money. Now if you read that letter from me and doubted my word, you would continue in your misery even though you had my word of promise written in front of you, but if you believed my word then you would be rejoicing because of the fact that your problems because of the money are all gone, although I hadn’t physically given you the money yet. The same is with the Word of God, if you believe it then you can rejoice knowing that all your problems are going to be solved beyond any shadow of doubt, but if you did not believe then you would lose the benefits of believing His Word.
God knew that there would come a time when people would turn away from the truth and listen to false teachings, fables and not want to be rooted in sound doctrine, that is why the Word of God needs to be preached to all [2 Timothy 4:2-5]. Because man can only be complete and equipped for every good work through His Word. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness [2 Timothy 3:16-17].
“All those who hear the Word of God and listens to it is like the wise man who built his house on the rock, and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. But everyone who hears and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall” [Matthew 7:24-27].
